The Sailors: Amateur British & Irish Yachtsmen Before World War One

George F. Holmes, 1861–1940

One of the founding members of the Humber Yawl Club in 1883 and an early pioneer of British amateur yachting, Holmes was a generation older than most of the men documented here. He is perhaps best-remembered today as a friend of Albert Strange, fellow canoe-yawl enthusiast. Tony Watts as recently published Holmes of the Humber: His Life and Times which he describes as being both a nautical book and a social document. It is perhaps the most authoritative source of information about Holmes available.
