George F. Holmes, 1861–1940
One of the founding members of the Humber Yawl Club in 1883 and an early pioneer of British amateur yachting, Holmes was a generation older than most of the men documented here. He is perhaps best-remembered today as a friend of Albert Strange, fellow canoe-yawl enthusiast. Tony Watts as recently published Holmes of the Humber: His Life and Times
which he describes as being both a nautical book and a social document. It is perhaps the most authoritative source of information about Holmes available.
